Chapter 4

When Tressie returned to her shop she had plenty to tell Buford. He sat there, listening intently, as she told him everything that had happened and everything that she had found out.

“Blackmail!” she felt the word in her mind when she finished. Buford seemed to think this could be key to the mystery and Tressie had to agree. But she wanted to do more research and have all the information at her disposal while they planned their next move.

“Let’s see if we can find out anything more about the brooch. She was telling me that there’s some history to it and I wonder if that could be important here in some way.”

She wasn't sure where to look for information about the brooch. There was a jeweler in town who seemed to know a lot about local history as well and she thought that maybe he could help her. She wasn't sure where else she could look.

She headed down to the shop. As soon as she walked inside she saw Mr. Philips, the jeweler, sitting behind the counter working away rebuilding the delicate mechanism of a watch. He looked up when she came in and smiled at her. He was an elderly man with a lined face. He blinked a couple of times and then greeted her.

“Hello, my dear!” he said, “and what can I do for you today?”

"I was hoping I could ask you a couple of questions if that's OK?"

“Of course, of course! Ask away!”

“Well, I was looking through an old book today - it was a book about the town - and I saw a couple of diagrams of a certain piece of jewelry and the text beneath the pictures caught my eye.”

“Oh? What did it say?”

"Well, the pictures were of an emerald brooch. And beneath the pictures, it said that the brooch belonged to the Botham family and had an 'interesting history,' but it didn't elaborate any more than that."

"Hmm. The Botham family. I'm not sure about the name - it might be who I'm thinking of - but there was certainly an emerald brooch that people spoke of a bit. I don't know how much of what I heard is true and how much of it is some kind of legend. I think that maybe it's a case of the two things mixing so that you can't be quite sure what is true and what isn't. Such things tend to happen in small towns, after all."

Tressie knew what he meant. But she had a chance to go back and see what parts of any local legends were true. She waited for the jeweler to continue.

"Yes," he said, nodding thoughtfully, "there was a family, and they had a brooch that had some aura around it. People used to speak about it, saying that it was cursed. I don't know where such stories come from. It's the kind of thing that people usually just gossip about a bit and then it tends to disappear. But this one was different.
